John J. Madden Mental Health Center
The Illinois Department of Human Services operates the John J. Madden Mental Health Center, also known as MJMC. The facility has a psychiatric hospital unit. The center also offers recreational activities. William Thompson, a recreation specialist at MJMC, recently organized a luncheon celebrating Black History Month. He has worked at the facility for over 20 years, and is responsible for organizing many events at the facility.
Staff cut corners
There have been multiple complaints filed about how staff at Madden Mental Health Center cut corners. An investigation by the state Department of Mental Health revealed that in 1978, half a dozen workers were unemployed and overcrowding persisted on all but two of the inpatient units. The turnover rate was high and staff morale was low. Patients began to see the center as a “place to stay,” rather than a place where they could seek treatment.
It accepts Medicaid, Medicare, Cash or Self-Payment
Medicaid is a health insurance program administered by the federal and state governments, which pays for services for low-income people. It has no deductibles or monthly payments, and the government pays directly to providers for the care provided. While it covers many mental health services, Medicaid is not the only option for patients. In some states, Medicaid can also cover services for a person’s family members.
It abused a young lady with depression
Madden had withdrawn from friends and family, abused prescription medication, and took illicit drugs to cope with his mental health conditions. He was a victim of undiagnosed depression and mania, but he recognized that he needed help to overcome his illness. Madden sought treatment at Seattle Children’s Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (PBMU) and experienced success. He has described his stay at PBMU as the “ten most important days of his life.”
It has 20 physicians
Madden Mental Health Center is a group practice with 20 physicians and one location. The doctors specialize in six areas of medicine. The practice offers primary care, behavioral health and rehabilitation services.
